All in all, Astro Bot is definitely one of 2024’s best games, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were considered to be the year’s best. If there were anything to criticize about the game, it may just be the game’s difficulty and its exclusivity. While the taysentoto former may be alleviated with its already announced free DLC challenge levels and speedrun mode, the latter may be something that might not be addressed.
Some are placed right in front of you, but most require the aforementioned curiosity to pull you off the beaten path in search of the game’s bountiful secrets. One of the best mechanics–which I very much hope becomes standard in the genre moving forward–is a robot bird companion who can join you in any level you decide to replay. The bird pings for collectibles and leads you right to the remaining bots, secret Void levels, and puzzle pieces you’ve not yet found. This makes playing the game to 100% completion a joy and never a grind. I’ve never cared about PlayStation Trophies before, but I expect to unlock them all in Astro Bot, if only incidentally because I want to see and do everything this game offers. Astro Bot is a 3D adventure platformer that features the PlayStation mascot, Astro, as he travels to different worlds in search of his lost crew members and to repair the PS5 mothership.
What elevates that beyond a bit of throwback nostalgia is that developer Team Asobi may be the most skilled studio working today when it comes down to game feel. Astro Bot plays like a dream thanks to its ultra precise movement. Part of its secret weapon is Astro’s hover jump, which lets him float in the air a bit longer before landing. I never lose my momentum because of a mistimed jump and can usually recover if I misjudge a spinning platform’s trajectory. In addition to a punch and spin attack, the jets from my boosters can fry enemies below me. That means that I rarely need to stop moving to take care of a few pesky bots.
Continuing with the God of War example, Astro will use the Leviathan Axe to attack enemies, and just like Santa Monica’s action games, it can be thrown and recalled, freezing enemies and helping progress through the stage. We won’t spoil the others, but PlayStation fans will be delighted with these Astro Bot renditions of some favourite franchises. Astro Bot’s world is filled with detailed animations and responsive environments that react to the player’s movements.
At your base, you can also use coins in a vending machine to unlock items for these themed bots, giving them little motifs that you can interact with. While Astro Bot is on the shorter side than most other games, with the main campaign running only around 12 hours, this is still an experience that players shouldn’t rush through. The levels throughout Astro Bot are some of the best platforming in all of gaming; players should take as long as they need to take it all in. Every stage is crafted with intent, as nothing feels out of place.
Astro Bot is also meant to be a DualSense showcase, and it certainly does a lot there, though I continue to feel like the controller’s most passionate fans are within the company itself. In the few instances where the hero isn’t wearing an ability, the game still finds ways to reinvent itself. But once that awesome level was finished, I never saw the mechanic used again. Astro Bot feels like it’s showing off at times, but never in a way that pats itself on its back. It’s ceaselessly cute and clever, and feels more like a little kid delighted to show you their toy collection than a braggart displaying their trophies. The only ability that doesn’t work as cleanly as others is the one used in an underwater level.

It doesn’t even take the game more than five minutes to get its story started. As soon as players boot up the game, Astro Bot and his crew of fellow Bots get their ship (which, coincidentally, looks like a PlayStation 5) destroyed by Neblux, the Space Bully. It’s now up to Astro Bot to find the missing parts of the ship that are scattered throughout the galaxy while rescuing his lost friends. This isn’t a bad thing, since players don’t need to have that much story or depth for Astro Bot, or platformers in general. Instead of having a full narrative, Astro Bot lets the gameplay shine and do the talking for it. The feel of Astro Bot is both incredible and incredibly frustrating, but not for the reasons you think.

Thankfully, checkpoints are often generously and frequently located, meaning you’re only ever moments away from the spot of your previous demise. Astro Bot really is the video game equivalent of venturing through Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory; a delightful concoction of experimentation and joy, just without the child endangerment. Chocolate death pipes and fizzy lifting drinks are instead swapped out for sinkholes leading to treasure and an inflatable friend who helps you reach floating platforms. I’m also pulling for a Final Fantasy-themed bot because it just feels right, y’know. The sheer number of boss fights throughout Astro Bot is exciting, but each boss battle’s energetic song is what really brings their encounters to life.
I could go on and on about every unique level, but the wonder of Astro Bot lies in discovery itself. Astro is revived by his Dual Speeder, a smaller spaceship resembling the DualSense controller, and together they begin reactivating satellites and exploring galaxies to rescue the crew and rebuild the mothership. Along the way, he rescues V.I.P. Bots (guest characters from other games) and explores planets based on Ape Escape, God of War, Uncharted, LocoRoco, and Horizon. A PlayStation fiesta of characters and hodgepodge of borrowed game mechanics blend seamlessly. While it may sound as if the game just copies the homework of all the games that came before it, that is simply not the case. Astro Bot takes every lesson these previous works taught, and precisely refines them with both overwhelming charm and genre re-defining innovation.

However if you’re still not used to using the PlayStation VR, you can’t afford this game and the headset or the aforementioned game isn’t your cup of tea, you should give this game a miss but you don’t know what you’re missing. In each level, the main objective is to rescue Astro’s crew, scattered throughout the game’s five worlds and twenty levels. Players also face bosses at the end of each world, which require a certain number of rescued bots to challenge.
