Bluepoint Games perfectly reimagined the original version of Demon’s Souls and gave it the remake it deserves. This project jumpstarted the modern Soulslike genre with the same mechanics, world design, structure, and more. Players can piece the lore together by speaking to different NPCs and visiting ruins, which is what the original director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, wanted to experiment with early on. Players can fight massive dragons and other colossal threats standing in their way. Co-op is another returning feature from the original, which can alloow players to fight demons together or each other by invading their worlds with the Black Eye Stone.

If you’re a veteran of the original game, remember cheesing Maneater through the fog door on the bridge? However, combat is the name of the game and if you’ve played Dark Souls or any of its sequels, you know what you’re in for. Combat is grounded and brutal, where enemies can and will fight unfairly with glee. The sense of accomplishment from finally beating a challenging foe or discovering a hidden area is immense. The blocky, near-textureless foes from the original become nightmarish abominations straight out of The Thing.

So we can say that Mr. Miyazaki’s new game has exactly the same magic in its gameplay. The difficulty of the game in this remake version is still very high and we are on the side of a very difficult game. It is true that it is still very difficult, but it no longer has the sometimes cowardly difficulty of the original version. FromSoftware as a company has moved on from Demon’s Souls in a major way, and it didn’t have anything to do with the remake from Bluepoint. Unfortunately, despite a Demon’s Souls 2 being theoretically possible, it’s very unlikely it ever gets made due to Sony owning the Demon’s Souls IP. The original Demon’s Souls was developed by FromSoftware, but it was published by Sony exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Sony owns the Demon’s Souls IP and published the 2020 remake developed by Bluepoint Games. This creates a unique situation where Sony owns the IP, but FromSoftware owns the creative DNA (combat systems, world-building style, etc).
“It’s one of the most beloved games in the PlayStation catalog. It’s the most requested title for a remake that we’ve ever had. But I was always a little afraid of tackling it because it’s so beloved. It wasn’t until we redefined what a remake was with Shadow of the Colossus on PlayStation 4 that we felt that we could take on the challenge of Demon’s Souls and do it justice. Judging by the fact that Demon’s Souls doesn’t utilize any specific innovative solutions present on PS5 apart from taking advantage of powerful hardware, a PS4 version of the game is quite possible.

In short, the Souls community would not exist as it does today, if these hardcore Japanese players had not been the first ones to pioneer the way for the rest of us. The mechanics of Character Tendency and World Tendency, which are barely touched upon in Bloodborne, do not exist in other Souls games and cause each Archstone to change based on your current Tendency. Events happen, enemies move, new enemies appear, NPC quests spawn, and more depending on what actions you have taken in your game world. And ALL of these things are easily missed if you do not play over and over again, which is something that no reviewer and most players would not do unless they knew to because the game is so punishing.
You will have to worry about your equip burden — the total weight of the armor and weapons you’re wearing — if you want to stay mobile and agile. Dodge-rolling out of the way of attacks is crucial to your success in Demon’s Souls, and if you’re bogged down with heavy armor, weapons, and shields, you’re going to roll sluggishly. Experiment with different types of weapons to see what suits your play style, and what works best on certain enemies.

However, all speculation was put to rest when Sony unveiled at last June’s PlayStation 5 event that Bluepoint Games is developing a remake of the 2009 classic title, Demon’s Souls.
